IN THE PARKING lot, I dig my phone from my pocket to open the ride share app. God must be on my side. A driver is down the street at Old Glory and arrives as I text Ruby.

Give Ford and Daisy my best. See you Monday.

I use the trip home to think of all the reasons why Finn and I are a terrible fit. Minutes tick by, the city lights pass fewer and far between, and I come up with one: His heart belongs to Isla.

And I have to be okay with this because she had him first.

As with all things in life, timing is key. I’ve had the worst. But, and this is a big but, I intend to keep Finn in my life—as my friend and my crew chief. So when the car pulls alongside my blue, forties-style bungalow outside the city, instead of sulking in my room, I head straight to the garage in the back.

The porch light next to the door welcomes me home, bright and unmuted by the dull gloom weighing its owner down. A chilly wind blows last fall’s leaves around my feet. I’m a terrible lawn tender, and even worse at managing the ivy scaling the siding. I make a mental note to hire a company to manage all things outside while I’m at the track through the summer season.

The key clicks the lock open, and I push into my safe haven, the place I do most of my thinking. One wall is full of tools, a workbench that spans the full thirty feet, electronics and a sound system I hung on the pegboard one Saturday when I needed a project. The others are bare drywall, the seams scraped with mud and left to dry white on gray.

As soon as I slide the door shut behind me, I flip the heater on and slip my booties off. My jacket follows to pool on the floor, along with my bra that I wrestle out of. The air inside is icy, and my nipples pebble instantaneously from the cold. Left in only my rhinestone skull tank and skirt, I contemplate my next move on the seventy-one Ford Challenger that sits next to the El Camino. With my finger, I follow the white stripe sliding over the purple body and then turn to lean against it. Arms locked around my midsection, I contemplate life.

What was I thinking?

I laugh out loud at that. I like Finn. So much so, I’ve managed to negate every warning bell blaring in the distance. He was engaged for ages. He’s my crew chief. We work together. We’re supposed to be buddies. For the love of all that’s holy, just this morning he told me I’m temporary. But feelings make everything sticky, and even with all of those obstacles, he’s worth the trouble.

I try to get mad, to find some kind of anger to fuel a contempt that will change my internal workings when it comes to Finnegan Savage, and . . .
